Huge numbers of 1 pf coins were minted in 1950 when West Germany became a country - in fact, so many were struck that no new 1 pf pieces were minted again until 1966, and the 1950 coins remained in circulation for half a century.

These currently retail for maybe a dollar if well-worn from circulation, up to $4 or $5 if uncirculated. 1950 was the first year of regular postwar coinage for the BDR (Federal Republic of Germany) so enormous numbers were struck to supply the needs of commerce. Over 3 billion 1-pfennig coins were struck at 4 separate mints in that year alone. 1950-dated coins were in many cases more common than later issues. They could easily be found in change up till the introduction of euro coins in 2002.
