$1000 bills were printed as late as 1945, although all of those were dated 1934. They saw limited use but could be obtained from banks up till July, 1969. At that time President Nixon suspended the distribution of all bills larger than $100 as a way of combatting money-laundering and other forms of organized crime.
Large-denomination notes are effectively out of circulation but are still legal tender and have never been recalled. In any case it wouldn't make sense to spend one at face value given that they're worth more to collectors.
