I assume it is a French franc and not from Switzerland or any of the other countries that use (or used) that denomination. Large numbers of francs were struck that year because of currency revaluation, and they stayed in circulation up till they were replaced with euros in 2002. Unless your coin is uncirculated it's only worth about a quarter.
Many countries have used or currently use coins denominated in francs. Please post a new and more specific question with its country of origin.
37.936.000 coins were struck of this type, and you will pay about 5 dollars for it...
Depending on condition, this coin can be worth up to $25.

Quite a bit ! Swiss 5 Franc coins from 1931 to 1967 have 0.4027 ounces of real silver in.
The year on the Swiss Franc coin says nothing about the value but about the date when the coin was fabricated. Check out the number on the coin to see how much it's worth. You have the smallest piece (5 Rappen) going up to pieces of 10, 20 and 50 Rappen (100 Rappen = 1 Franc) , 1, 2 and 5 Swiss Franc coins.
