What is the value of a real double headed Kennedy half dollar? |
[Edit] |
Answer
About $5.95 from a novelty shop. Someone accidentally spent his magician's coin. Just because it was wrapped by a bank doesn't mean it came from the mint that way.
Answer
If you have examined the coin thoroughly with a STRONG magnifier, looking at both the outside edge, and also just inside the raised rims on both sides of the coin, and you still cannot find any evidence of a seam, then I suggest you go to the ANACS website -- http://www.anacs.com -- check out their show list, and take the coin to be examined by them at their nearest show.
They will give you a free professional examination of your coin, and will also accept submissions for certification.
Good luck!
Dan
Answer
The chance of this being a "real" coin is vanishingly small.Coin presses are designed so that obverse and reverse (front and back) dies cannot be interchanged accidentally, kind of like the way the electrical cord from a dryer or large air conditioner cannot fit into a wall outlet.
Techniques to produce magicians' coins have become quite sophisticated as the cost of computer-guided machining equipment has fallen. Seams can be almost undetectable unless a very strong magnifier is used.
