What is the value of an 1803 nickel? |
[Edit] |
Answer
Greetings,
If the date is in fact "1803", your coin is not a nickel, but a "Half Dime". Nickels as we know them were not produced until 1866. Half Dimes on the other hand (yes, they have a face value of five cents, but are known as "Half-Dimes") began in 1794. This particular coin also has a "variety", in that it may bear a Large 8 or a Small 8 in the date.
Values of coins are primarily dependent on their condition or grade. Many web links and printed resources are available to assist with grading or you can visit a reputable coin dealer for assitance. However, if attempting to grade the coin yourself, ensure that your resource you choose conforms to the American Numismatic Association's (ANA) grading guidelines. The following is a range of values for the coin indicated above at various grades:
| AG3 | G4 | VG8 | F12 | VF20 | XF40 | AU50 | MS60 |
Large 8 $450.00 $750.00 950.00 1300.00 2000.00 4000.00 7500.00 9000.00 Small 8 $550.00 $950.00 1400.00 1900.00 3000.00 5500.00 8000.00 11,500.00
The above reference values was taken from the Numismatic News Coin Market monthly price guide for December 2006. Hope this has helped. MGirard
AnswerThe first US 5 cent nickel was made in 1886. After looking at the other 1803 nickel questions on this forum, turn your coin over and read the real date (2004) on the other side. |
