The value it approx $8000 for a one in good condition

More details and clarificationThe above answer applies only to an 1883 Philadelphia double eagle. These were only struck as proofs. Two other mints struck them for circulation. Look on the back of the coin to see if there's a small mint mark letter below the eagle. There may be a CC or S.

Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 02/2012:

"CC" mint mark (Carson City):

Very worn condition - $2,160

Moderately worn - $2,380

Slightly worn - $2,410

Almost no wear - $3,770

Uncirculated - $7,740 to $31,730 depending on quality

"S" mint mark (San Francisco):

Very worn - $1,990

Moderately worn - $2,020

Slightly worn - $2,030

Almost no wear - $2,078

Uncirculated - $2,230 to $21,260

If your coin doesn't have a mint mark under the eagle it should be inspected by a certified professional to make sure it isn't an altered CC or S coin.

DISCLAIMER: The retail values quoted are the best available as of the date shown, but may vary significantly due to changes in the precious metals market. Also the wholesale (buying) price of a coin will be less than the selling (retail) price. A reputable coin dealer will be able to give a more accurate valuation based on inspection of the coin.
