The Japanese word for 'boy' is "Shōnen" (少年)=literally means "One of early） age".

or "Otokonoko" （男の子）、"otoko" ( 男) means man or male. Also in Japanese schools they tend to use "Danshi" (男子）a lot, very similar to "otokonoko" but I think "Danshi" is like boys but "otokonoko" is a bit more for little boys.

"Otoko" (男) meaning "male" is the first part. "Dan" also means "male" but when typing this on a computer you'd get 段 or something else, having a list to scroll through to find the right kanji, therefor writing "Otoko" is easier.
"Onna" (女) meaning "female" is the second part. "Jo" also means "female" but again, when typing this on a computer you'd get 序 or something else in the list, having to let you scroll through it to find the right one, therefor writing "Onna" is easier as well.
