In Ballet or in general dance, motif means a starting point, so a motif could be clap your hands three times then you jump and twirl etc and a motif is generally used at the beginning of a dance.
It is basically changing the level, dynamics, space, actions and relationships( the dance term!) e.c.t.

dance motif is a dance performed in drama
Motif development is essential when choreographing a dance as it acts as a building block for your routine. Developing a motif allows you to change certain things about the motif, for example you can change the actions or dynamics in the dance. Doing this to each motif you create enables you to play around with your routine or reinforce the theme of your dance.
Use of retrograde in dance: is to perform the motif backwards in a dance
Accumulation in dance is where a dancer will start performing and other dancers join in within the motif. (Adding a person/people into your motif at different times.) E.g, Someone starts dancing and another person joins in half way through.
Change levels and changing direction.
