It is a tribute to her mother who was a blind trapeze artist, or rather it is an expression of gratitude to her parents for giving her the gift of life. It is quite a moving short story.

I assume you are referring to the short story by Louise Erdich. At the end, the narrator is recalling an event from when she was seven years old: how her mother saved her life, when their home caught fire. She is telling the story of how it happened. Her mother, a former trapeze artist many years ago, used her acrobatic skills to vault to a window and rescue her from the burning house, and the two leaped towards the net of the waiting fire-fighters below.

The title "The Leap" can refer to taking a chance and learning to trust-- the narrator says that her mother was right in telling her once long ago that "as you fall, there is time to think." She says she is not startled by the noises or even by the flames; she briefly wonders what will happen if they do not fall into the net, but then she just grabs onto her mother and trusts her to get them to safety. And of course, the title also refers to the actual leap-- at the end, the two leap out the window, and they fall to earth, safe from the flames.
