A national emblem is the symbol that represents the nation to the world. It may be found on the nation's official symbols, such as the national coat of arms and the national flag. In Portugal, the national emblem is the armillary sphere. The sphere dates back to the early astronomers. For it provides a model of the heavens, and includes such vital navigational information as ecliptic, horizon, and meridian. The armillary sphere represents the Portuguese nation's constant quest to reach new horizons, in the most skilled and efficient of ways. For Portuguese sailors and navigators dominated the sphere's use early on. In fact, they became particularly skilled at navigation by the location of the sun in the daytime sky, and of the moon, planets, and stars during the night. And these skills changed world history for all times, and in all places, through Portugal's pioneer, maritime linking of 15th and 16th century Europe with the entire world beyond the Mediterranean Basin.
