Turmeric is an individual herb/spice/root which is one of the most essential ingredients in curry powder (which is a general name for spice blends which may have a wide variety of ingredients).
The can on my shelf lists as ingredients: Coriander, Turmeric, Chillies, Salt, Cumin, Fennel seed, black pepper, garlic, ginger, fenugreek, cinnamon, cloves, anise, and mustard.

∙ 11y agoThe correct spelling is turmeric It is a spice commonly from the tropical South Afica. It is of the family of ginger. It tastes somewhat like pepper but is bitter. It is commonly used in curry dishes. Turmeric has medicinal uses as an antioxidant and anti- inflammatory uses.
"It is a spice commonly from the tropical South Afica" ? I would have to disagree, only because I searched the entire online internet database & couldn't find a place known as South Afica!! ( JUST KIDDING, obvious typo ) Turmeric IS commonly found in South Africa, which is what the first reply said [close enough] AND IT'S A great response/reply (ANSWER) I was really just going to comment on the SPELLING misconception/misunderstanding. MANY PEOPLE Pronounce & spell TURMERIC as tumeric, which is incorrect. Yet plenty of professionals INSIST that both pronunciations/spelling are equally correct, which is simply NOT TRUE. THE ONE & ONLY RIGHT WAY IS TURMERIC, but just like many people pronounce FEBRUARY as Febuary...it's just something we're accustomed to. (DOESN'T MAKE IT CORRECT!!) just socially accepted.
