Plural foramina (fə-rām'ə-nə) or foramens

An opening or short passage, especially in the body. ◇ The large opening in the base of the skull through which the spinal cord passes is called the foramen magnum (māg'nəm). ◇ The opening in the septum between the right and left atria of the heart, present in the fetus but usually closed soon after birth, is the foramen ovale Merriam-Webster's Medical Dictionary - Cite This Source - Share This Main Entry: uncinate process

This description suggests a condition where the bony projection (uncinate process) in the spine has grown in size, contributing to pressure or compression on the surrounding structures like the spinal cord. The bulging disc material may be pushing towards the left side, potentially causing some compression or indentation on the spinal cord in that region.

Uncinate Process of the Cervical Vertebra

Cervical uncinate process is similar to that of the pancreas. The structure is quite similar, except the location. It's a hook shaped process that projects from the lateral border or the side edges of the top of the bodies lying in the vertebral region. The uncinate process lies between the third and sixth of the cervical vertebra. The first thoracic vertebra is also known as uncinate process or cervical vertebra. The bony part of the uncinate process provides a support to the vertebra and prevents it from sliding backwards from below. The uncinate process of the spine is a similar structure to that of the cervix. This bone is projected into the ethmoid bone that articulates with the interior portion of the nasal conchae.

The uncinate process of the ribs can be a separate projection of bones. They mostly occur in birds and in reptiles. This bone strengthens the rib cage and helps to perform swift motion. They play a significant role in the respiration process by increasing the effectiveness of the muscles involved in the respiratory process. Narrowing of the spine due to enlargement can cause health problems.

What is uncinate hypertrophy?

Uncinate hypertrophy is usually caused by osteoarthritis. This occurs when joints in the neck and spine grow bigger than normal.

What does uncinate process hypertrophy at C5 C6 mean?

It means a small portion of one of the bones in the spine is bigger than it should be. C5/C6 are at the base of the neck, just above where it joins the body.

What is uncinate hypertrophy in the c5 c6?

The uncinates or uncovertebral joints are joints only found in the part of the spine that is in the neck (the cervical spine). When the uncinates hypertrophy, that means that they have gotten bigger. This usually occurs as a result of osteoarthritis or what is better termed as degenerative joint disease. There are also holes in the spinal column from which nerves come out. These nerves come from the spinal cord and go to every tissue in your body. Sometimes this hypertrophy or enlargement of the uncinates can encroach upon these holes that the nerves come out of, and can "pinch" or compress those nerves. That is foraminal stenosis, foramen just means hole, & stenosis just means narrowing. Therefore the answer to your question is enlarged joints in your cervical spine that are narrowing the holes that the nerves come out of. C4 & C4 just describes what level is affected, the 3rd and 4th cervical vertebrae from the top.

What is right-sided mild foraminal narrowing secondary to uncinate spurring?

Mild right-sided foraminal narrowing secondary to uncinate spurring means that the space available for nerves to travel through is narrowed. The reason for this in this case is the uncinate spurring, which are bone spurs shaped like hooks, are intruding into that space.

What is uncinate disease?

Joints found at C3-C7 which limit lateral cervical motion. AKA joints of von Luschka.

They are four bundles of long fibres which connect the different lobes of the cerebral hemisphere together. These 4 bundles are = superior longitudinal + inferior longitudinal + cingulum + uncinate bundles
