Canadian Forces Base Valcartier is located 25 km west of Quebec City. CFB Valcartier was originally erected as a military camp in August of 1914 as part of the mobilization of a Canadian Expeditionary Force at the onset of World War I. Due to its proximity to the port of Quebec it became the largest military camp on Canadian soil, including some 32,000 men and 8,000 horses. Currently CFB Valcartier is home to 5 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group, which consists of 5e Régiment d'artillerie légère du Canada (5 RALC), the 12e Régiment blindé du Canada (12 RBC), 5e Régiment du génie de combat (a combat engineering regiment), the three Regular Force battalions of Le Royal 22e Régiment, 5 Service Battalion, and 5 Military Police Platoon. The base also houses 430 Tactical Helicopter Squadron, a communications squadron and other support units. CFB Valcartier is also home to a Defence Research & Development Canada(DRDC) location, which conducts military research for the Canadian Forces. ASU Valcartier is also home of the Army Cadet Summer Training Centre Valcartier, which trains Royal Canadian Army Cadets of the Eastern Region / Province of Québec,

Who was Charles wolff of valcartier quebec?

Charles was born in 1926, the second child of Howard and Mary (nee Allard) Wolff. He liked to read and travelled to Europe in his early twenties to check all the places he had read about. He was a bit of a dreamer although he worked for Canadian Forestery Services for most of his life. He always had wild stories to tell about his tree planting crews and his travels to places needing reforestration. In his later years, a stroke cost him his speech and he was greatly frustrated at being unable to tell a story. Type your answer here...

What is a troop train?

There are a number of possibilities. In Canada, troop trains were used simply civilian trains (or in some cases, converted cattle cars) used to transport soldiers from cities to training camps, such as Camp Valcartier, and then on to Quebec City or Halifax for the voyage across the Atlantic Ocean to England for further training, before heading to the battlefields of France and Belgium. Once the troops arrived in one of the port cities in France, they boarded another troop train, which would then take them to wherever their assigned battalion or regiment was in France/Belgium. As well, in some cases, troop trains were also used to move soldiers from one area of battle to another, for example, the moving of the entire Canadian Corps in the lead-up to the Hundred Days Offensive (see "Canada's Hundred Days" here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada%27s_Hundred_Days)

Who is Harry Colebourn?

In August, 1914, Lieutenant Harry Colebourn, a Veterinary Officer with the 34th Fort Garry Horse of Manitoba, was travelling by train from his home in Winnipeg to enroll in the Canadian Army Veterinary Corps in Valcartier, Quebec. Travelling by Canadian Pacific Railway, his train made a stop at White River in Ontario, where he noticed a man further along the station platform with an American black bear cub tied to the arm of the bench on which he was seated. He struck up a conversation and, learning that the man was a trapper who had shot and killed the cub's mother, Colebourn offered him $20 for the young bear -- the trapper eagerly accepted the offer and the cub was taken to Quebec, where she became the mascot of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Brigade, as Harry had been assigned to the Headquarters of that formation. One of the units in the 2nd Brigade was the 6th (Fort Garry) Battalion, which had been formed from Harry's old unit, the 34th Fort Garry Horse. --this should explain everything, but if you need more info see the question,'When was Pooh invented?' or visit http://www.poohcorner.com/A-Short-History-of-Pooh-and-Winnie.html

How many Canadian soldiers fought in World War 1?

According to the Canadian Military Heritage Project, approximately 32,000 men initially assembled September 04, 1914 at Valcartier, Quebec as a response to England's acceptance of help."During this monumental conflict, 619,636 served for Canada and over 66,000 gave their lives." Canada bought her place at the table when the treaty was being written, thru the blood of her soldiers. This was Canada's " War of Recognition and Independence ". After the end of World war One Canada no longer had to ask Britain for permission to act as a nation. It had won that right thru it's war record.
