If you're installing insulation yourself, remember these guidelines when using a vapor barrier: * Always place the vapor barrier towards the warm side of the insulated area - facing downward on the attic floor or to the interior side of the wall. * When adding a second layer of insulation to an attic, do NOT add a second vapor barrier - this can trap moisture inside the first layer. Use loose-fill or unfaced batts or blankets; if only faced batts are available, cut facing every few inches to allow air to pass through. * If the vapor barrier tears during installation, tape it tightly. * If you have a crawlspace, add polyethylene vapor barrier on the floor of the area to reduce condensation from ground moisture.
Vapour barrier is directly onto studs.
The thickness is mainly for refinishing. Thicker wood can be refinished more times than thinner. If you are laying on a cement slab, you want to use a vapor barrier. Some flooring products have a barrier preinstalled on the undersideof the flooring.
all manufacturers will indicate what kind of vapor barrier needs to be installed under their product. follow the directions to ensure both satisfactory performance of the flooring and compliance to warranty restrictions. if the product has an attached underlayment don't assume that it will suffice, you'll be bummed when the manufacturer's rep dismisses your claim for non-compliance to installation intructions.
The type of underlay you need will depend on the type of sub floor or floor you are putting the laminate on is made of. If the sub floor is made of concrete, you would want vapor barrier underlay. If the sub floor is made of wood a standard or premium underlay would used.
There are numerous tips available online for installing laminate flooring. Some of the most popular tips include the following: 1. Purchase ten percent more flooring than required to account for waste and mistakes. 2. The boxes of laminate should be opened and let sit for a couple of days in the room in which the floor is to be installed, in order to acclimatize the laminate flooring. 3. When installing laminate flooring over a concrete surface, vapor shield should be laid down prior to installation. 4. Laminate flooring does not require any special tools to install. However, it is handy to have spacers, bumpers and a pry bar on hand.
Vapor is another word for moisture. A vapor barrier is a sheet of plastic covering the entire surface under the floor to prevent moisture from causing the floor to warp or absorb stains. You would typically use a vapor barrier in basements with concrete floors.
Rosin paper is used under hardwood flooring to provide a vapor barrier. ---- Many manufactures today say that rosin paper is your choice. It does make installation easier because the boards move around the floor smoother, but offers little more.

A vapor barrier is an impenetrable layer that keeps water from seeping through from the ground. It is always advisable to use a vapor barrier regardless of humidity.
Moisture can migrate through a slab foundation. Older slabs did not have a vapor barrier but I have seen it on newer slabs as well. Vinyl flooring will develop mineral deposits or lumps and discoloration. Wood flooring will warp. Carpet will sometimes work without problem or may mildew. Surprisingly, tile works well as it will allow moisture to migrate through the grout joints.
