Copper is the usual conductor used to carry electricity. Aluminium (aluminum) is sometimes used. Silver is a good conductor but is too expensive for general use. Many materials are conductive to some extent.

In electrical terminology bare copper wire does not have insulation on it. Most bare copper is used for grounding purposes for direct burial installations.
