A cadetship is the position, rank, or commission of a cadet.
A midshipman in the RN ( British_) was a cadet officer candidate- in training, on the job, it was a distinct Naval Rank, in the USN refers to Annapolis academy cadets- who are properly Midshipmen, as Cadet is an Army concept. A midshipman is not a regular USN rank at present- they were apprentice officer candidates- and now are in Annapolis or OCS< not undergoing on the job training on combat vessels!
