As of 2008, the population of the United States was approximately 304 million. Approximately 126 million people live west of the Mississippi River, including the non-contiguous states of Alaska and Hawaii, or approximately 41% of the US population. Therefore, the remaining 59% of the population, or approximately 178 million people live east of the Mississippi River.

What confuses people is that the (mean) average is actually across the Mississippi on the western side. The Pacific coast is more distant than the East from the Mississippi River. Search: "Mean center of the United States population Wiki".
