The Box Jellyfish is the most deadly jellyfish and lives in AustraliaA lot would say the Box jellyfish. This is true but the deadliest TYPE of box jellyfish isn't the common one. The Irukandji, which isn't often heard of ismore life threatening. What makes people so unsure about its venom is its size. An Irukandji (named after the Aboriginal Irukandji tribe) is transparent, weighs less than an ounce and is smaller than a peanut. As I have said it is not often heard of, which is a great danger because Irukandji stings are not extremely painful until an hour after being stung. If you got stung by one most people's immediate thought would be a bluebottle sting. Irukanji's season is from October till March and are found in northern Australian waters.

The most poisonous jellyfish in the world is a member of the box jellyfish called irukandji however it is allot smaller in size than its cosine Its actually about the size of a fingernail an almost invisible to the human eye but packs a lethal punch and if it dose not kill you it will leave you in hospital and the strongest dose of morphine will barely take the edge of the pain...... Stings of some species of the class Cubozoa and the Box jellyfish, such as the famous and especially toxic Irukandji jellyfish, can be deadly. The sea wasp, a box jellyfish found in Australian waters, can kill an adult human within a few minutes.

The box jellyfish, Chironex fleckeri, kills more humans by far than any other marine creature. Although their venom is deadly and most stings are excruciatingly painful, the vast majority of stings are not lethal. It takes about ten feet of tentacle contact to be life-threatening, or at least 50% of one limb fully envenomated. The vast majority of deaths are among children because of their lower body mass. Australia has reduced fatalities due to C. fleckeri to less than one death per year by closing beaches during the worst months, using protective net enclosures, wearing protective clothing, and medical personnel readiness including an anti-venom. The Philippines estimate about 20-40 deaths occur yearly due to box jelly stings.

Coming in second are the Irukandji jellyfish, which are also box jellies. Their sting is much less lethal, but extremely sneaky, and the symptoms are dreadful. They are tiny, and the sting is irritating, but often is hardly even noticed by the swimmer. But then about a half-hour after envenomation, a long list of horrible symptoms kick in (Irukandji syndrome) and hospitalization may be required. Even though Irukandji species are cousins to C. fleckeri jellies, there is currently no anti-venom.

The reason for this strange delayed reaction in humans is thought by scientists to be a result of what the Irukandji species preys upon. Irukandji jellies are so small that their diet consists mainly of larvae which don't have the complex nervous systems found in adult fish and humans. Their venom is fine for quickly immobilizing larval fish and crustaceans, but in humans their venom must accumulate in the lymph system before it can be effectively passed on to our nervous system. Since larger venomous box jellyfish species prey on adult fish, their venom must act immediately and directly on the nervous system to immobilize their prey and avoid damage.

Coming in at third place are the species of the genus, Physalia. The largest species, P. physalis (Portuguese Man of War) can be lethal, but rarely so. The Indo-Pacific region has a currently unassigned species that is considerably smaller than their Atlantic cousins, but resemble them closely. They are commonly called the Pacific Man of War, to differentiate them from the Portuguese Man of War. And a much smaller species still, P. utriculus, is commonly known as the blue bottle. These are often mistaken for Man of Wars, but their very small size (3 or 4 inches), and their single long tentacle make them easy to identify. No reported deaths have been attributed to blue bottles.
