Sadly, there is a misconception amongst an unenlightened minority that gay people tend to have jobs such as hair dressers, fitness instructors, air stewards and Thespians. This is perhaps because men in such positions may be perceived as effeminate, leading some to believe that they are gay whether or not they actually are; whereas a masculine, yet homosexual engineer, labourer, soldier, mechanic etc. may be assumed to be straight even though they are not, thus re-enforcing these out-dated stereotypes.
There is some speculation that there may be a slight correlation in between homosexuality and creativity; a trait which lends itself to a wide variety of jobs from art and design to corporate management to crime investigation and yes, even to hair-dressing. However, there are certainly no shortage of gay men in technical fields such as engineering and sciences (with the father of modern computing, Alan Turing, as the archetypal example), but sadly due to a hostile, homophobic and macho culture still prevalent in many jobs traditionally reserved only for men, such as construction, the true number of gay men in these fields is likely to be grossly underestimated as such men choose to remain in the closet.
