Most degrees of this type are in tandem with a field of study in preparation for a teaching career. For example, a Bachelor's Degree in Social Science with teacher certification (to teach Social Studies), or a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. These degrees prepare people to enter the teaching field. Other possibilities are: Get your masters in a special area qualifying you to teach reading as a specialist, special ed., administration. Keep taking classes and possibly teach college. Many affluent parents look for a nanny to care for just their children and often require a masters degree. You could work for text book companies. Teaching skills are very transferable into many businesses. Training is always needed for just about everything and who better to do this than a teacher.

Although this is a great answer, the reality is (I know this from current experience) there isn't much out there. If you want to work for large companies as a training consultant you need a) to work for a consultant, b) they want you to have adult education experience (classroom teaching does NOT cut it) and c) you could go into business as a training consultant. As I am a high school teacher, day care is not appealling. Not one retail chain will hire you for management because: you have too much education & you will not stay long (especially if a teaching gig comes up) - management have said this to my face so it's true.

Isn't it sad that you reccommend flipping burgers to someone who has just completed 6 years of training? I'm in Canada so it is 6 years to get a teaching degree. Any government agency here takes up to 6 months to hire an individual which is based on nepotism and seniority (union) - which is not inclusive of training or expertise.

It is discouraging, believe me I know but I found a great job as a training coordinator. I'd like to train though but I was told I needed an adult ed certificate - my education degree means nothing apparently so I'm doing that right now. Waste of time & money as I'm learning the same principles in that program as I did in my DEGREE. The other frustrating area is that companies will hire internal trainers because they need specialists, people who have on the job knowledge and expertise. These people are in my adult ed course right now & very dry trainers. Its not all doom and gloom though - patience is key & a supportive spous/partner (emotionally & financially).

There are still many useful places for teachers outside of traditional education. Large companies contract them for training employees or hire them for long term advancement program monitoring. Day cares NEED them. Many Day Care/Nurseries must have people with an Early Childhood or Education on staff to qualify for programs. Their are companies out there like Silvian Learning Center that focus on tutoring and remediation of students. Pretty much any retail chain would hire you as a manager because of your studies in classroom (workplace) management. In PA, we have Intermediate Units that service multiple districts. You could work for them developing curriculum or services they offer to member districts. Or you could always flip burgers.

Teaching, obviously, child care, nursery schools, alternative education settings (placement settings), corporate trainer, outdoor education specialist, part interpreter, tutor, librarian, burger flipper, manager of almost any retail store (classroom management and employee management are very close), tech writer (someone who writes manuals and instructions), almost any entry level job that requires only a BS in any major.
