There are lots of different things you can do with a theater degree. Most people think that theater degrees are only for acting and directing, but besides that you can take the performance experience and work in hundreds of different positions ranging from a dialect coach to a politician.
For steady and profitable work, anyone interested in being a theater major should look at being a major with a technical degree. You can be anything from a designer to a milliner, as well as many other positions.
Below are two links from the University of Northern Iowa Department of Theater website that list many positions in both the Performance and Design and Production fields.

Contact a local public library or college and ask if they have any career counseling software. Specifically, ACT's DISCOVER program provides great career information and answers things like, 'What can I do with a degree in ___." You can easily find employment with regional theaters, touring companies, theme parks, cruise ships, and roadhouses. Though film/television and live entertainment are very different industries, a degree in theater can provide a good foundation for either.
The opportunities vary depending on which direction you want to go. Film and television are very similar, and employees can work back and forth. While filmschool will teach you a lot of THEORY and some "nuts & bolts" to make a movie, know that most schools do not prepare students for a real life in the professional film industry. A degree will NOT guarantee you a job in the business. It can help if you are interested in an Executive position at a studio, however the film degree won't do it. You'll be more attractive with a Business, Legal, or Accounting background.
There is no single way to "get into" the movie business. The best way, though, is to learn how the industry actually works and then with that knowledge, you can then find a way in that works best for YOU. Work at every level comes as a result of networking... who you know and who knows you and what you're capable of. And it is true that MANY MANY more people work "below the line" so your chances of making a living in the industry are better if you are not interested in one of the "sexy" jobs, like directing and acting.
A degree in journalism, media, film or communications helps, but you don't need them. You can start out working in a tv station. Read the articles to see what I mean. Hope this helps.
