The Miami people, who have absolutely no connection with Florida, were originally located around Green Bay and later moved into the areas that later became Michigan and Indiana. Some Miami groups were called Wia and Piankashaw.
Men wore just a deerskin (buckskin) shirt, moccasins and a soft-tanned deerskin breechclout painted red. In summer only the breechclout and moccasins would be worn, earning the Miami the English name "naked men". Leggings were only put on for ceremonies and celebrations; these were gartered below each knee and had decorated bands down the front seam and around the bottom edge.
Women wore a buckskin wrap-around skirt painted red, with short leggings and moccasins. A poncho-like tunic was added in the cooler months.
Moccasins had soft soles and front seams on the top of the foot; very large cuffs were added (a tribal tradition that would identify them to any intelligent observer) - these flaps fell over the foot, almost hiding the moccasins. Each side flap was decorated in a different way, or in a kind of reverse pattern done with dyed porcupine quills, beads or ribbon.
Robes seem to have only been used by important people during ceremonies; these were often of deerskin painted with geometric designs.
Feathers were not widely used by the men of this tribe; a few warriors wore red-painted feathers. Shell beads were used for necklaces and bracelets as well as ear ornaments; shell disks were worn on leather strips around the neck. Painting and tattooing were widely used by both sexes, with red and black paint used most often.
Warriors carried huge shields of tough buffalo hide, tall enough to completely cover a man's body.
