Sartorial hijab is a phrase used to denote garments (typically female) associated with the 'modest' dress of Muslims. It is merely one aspect of hijab that every Muslim is called to have. Link on right are a list of styles found in predominantly Muslim societies and commonly associated with the word 'hijab'.

The burqa, which is a long loose garment which has long sleeves and goes all the way down to th feet. There is also the hijab which covers the hair and the face apart from the eyes.

The Burqa should be loose and baggy enough no to show the shape of a woman's figure.

All Islam rules and teachings are suited for all Muslims any where any time. This is due to the universality of Islam religion (as the last God religion) and its spread all over the world comprising Muslims belonging to a wide spread cultures, traditions, and races.

Accordingly, it is very difficult to specify traditional clothing for Muslim women. Muslim women are free to wear what they feel matching their local cultures and traditions and suiting her own preferences. The only condition is that what the Muslim woman wears should follow the Islam teachings and requirement. They are:

  • The clothing should be covering whole body (including head, hair, and neck) except face and hands. Religion does not require covering face and hands.
  • The clothing should be loose. It should not be tight and describing the figure.
  • The clothing should not be transparent and should not making visible the underneath.

No restriction on the cloth material or colors that Muslim women should wear. The cloth could be from silk or any other material. It could be colorful or not. It could be dark colored, white colored, of different colors, or whatever. It could be one piece cloth or more than one piece. However, women are commanded by Islam religion to wear cloth that covers the whole body, including head, hair, and neck but not required , per religion, to cover face and hands. That cloth:

  • should not be so tight to describe the woman body or sexy parts, and

  • should not be so transparent to make the under cloth visible.

The part of the cloth covering the head (and hair) but not the face is called Hijab in Arabic (or head dress or scarf)

However, the Islamic requirement is that the cloth should be covering the whole body, including head and hair, except face and hands. In addition, the cloth should not be so tight to describe the woman body and sensitive woman parts. Also, the cloth should not be transparent to show up the body underneath or to show up the under cloth. The piece of the cloth that covers the head and air (but not face) is called Hijab.

There is no universal name, to my information, for Muslim woman overall dress. It depends on the country cultures and practices and local language.

However, per Islam religion, the Muslim woman is allowed to dress whatever she likes and from whatever color she wants and of whatever cloth material she prefers but in condition that the cloth style satisfies the following requirements, per religion:

  • To be modest
  • To cover the whole body (including head, hair, and neck) except face and hands.
  • Not to be transparent and making visible what is underneath
  • Not to be tight and describing the woman figure and her sexy parts.
