Obstetricians are trained to deliver babies safely and to deal with any complications or illnesses the pregnant and deliverying mom may encounter. Obstetricians deliver the majority of babies born in the U.S. Midwives have various levels of medical training and can deliver a baby safely when the pregnancy is not high risk and there are no complications. Most midwives are associated with a medical hospital or medical center in case of emergencies during delivery.
