There are several different ways to categorize fire extinguishers "types".
- By class or classes of fire they extinguish (A, B, C, D, K);
- By type of agent used for extinguishing (water, foam, CO2, dry chemical, wet chemical, clean agent);
- By mechanism for dispersing the agent (internal pressure, external pressure cartridge, manual pump);
- By installation (portable, fixed point, fixed volume, multi-point, etc).
The fire extinguisher needed to flood an aircraft hangar with 12 feet of foam is a lot different from the one needed to put out a litter-can fire in an office.
Mainly only three, there are water, carbon-dioxide, and some with special chemicals that extinguish fires

∙ 14y agoWell there are several means by which fire alarm systems detect a fire. Heat detection, Smoke detection, Volumetric rate of rise (heat detection), local manual call station (pull station). These methods all sense the elements of fire and signal a result to the main alarm panel thus issuing an alarm condition.
