Veena (also spelled vina and veene) is a plucked stringed instrument used in Carnatic music. There are several variations of the veena, which in its South Indian form is a member of the lute family.

The four strings are made of various materials: specially treated animal gut, plastic or metal. Some strings have a "wrapped" core: the core itself is made of gut or plastic and has an outer covering of tightly-wound thin metal wire.

At the scroll end of the fingerboard, each string is are fixed only by the friction of a narrow cone-shaped wooden peg that is pressed firmly into a matching hole. It is a very clever design because each peg can still be turned enough to tighten or loosen its string so as to tune it exactly to the correct note.

At the body end, each string is either knotted tightly onto a hole in the specially-shaped wooden "tailpiece" or is held in a metal adjuster attached to the tailpiece which allows extra fine tuning to be done.
