Partly that they really DO NOT KNOW what it is that is why they keep changing names, relabeling and recatorizing it. They want to put multiples in a unique box and demand they live up to the diagnosis. The truth is that every multiple is different with ONE common denominator which is trauma in early childhood. Because every person is unique no multiple is alike. They cannot merely "tag" a person and say THIS IS YOUR PROBLEM! I can appreciate a more "scientific" point of view of the functioning of the human brain done by Dr. Fredrick Schiffer of Harvard. His study of the human brain actually proves that it is possible for two distinct personalities to develope in early childhood on both sides of the brain, thus creating a "separate" personality of right-brain, left-brain thinking, responses and developmental behaviors. Researchers are more objective in this study than therapists who love to take on such absurd notions that multiples are MENTALLY ILL and must be CURED of some disease or disorder. But in fact, those that suffer trauma and disassociated from it are relatively easier to convince that they should "control" such impulses themselves rather than treating the alters individually. This is why therapy takes TOO LONG in most cases. The "disassociator" is required by therapists to STOP DISASSOCIATING and TAKE CONTROL of themselves rather than BECOMING other people. They are doing MORE DAMAGE THAN GOOD because if one "disassociates" how can they be IN CONTROL when they "disappear"? Disassociators are NOT in control, period and research has proven the parts of the brain SHUT DOWN while other parts continue to function. It really is a fascinating study. You might want to pick up the book OF TWO MINDS by Dr. Schiffer. GOOD LUCK!

Socially Induced Multiplicity:

May occur when someone is exposed to information about DID, or about natural multiplicity, and subconciously adopts a form of mimicry of DID or multiplicity to either gain attention or fit into a social group. This is not usually dangerous, though it may cause some social harm, and dissipates once the need for the adopted character is past.

And while it is still debated, some theorize that dissociative identity disorder induced by false memories implaneted by therapists may be a problem as well.

*It should also be clarified that Multiplicity in general is not a disorder, as natural multiplicity does not meet the diagnostic criteria for Dissociative Identity Disorder [Which requires both dissociation, such as depersonalization, and memory loss, to be counted].

Psychodynamic explanation to multiple personality disorder?

This condition is now called DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder). Too many people were thinking of it as one of the Axis Two personality disorders. DID is an Axis One condition. DID is caused by violent and prolonged trauma in early childhood, usually including rape, incestuous or otherwise. People who are able to dissociate create alternate selves to take the abuse and trauma. Over time, these selves develop personality patterns (and sometimes personality disorders!) of their own. It is possible to integrate these parts together with therapy, but it requires an excellent therapist who is able to deal with hearing descriptions of horrible abuse. Many are not able to do this. The abuse experienced by DID survivors is far outside the usual, and some people aren't strong enough to let themselves admit such abuse of children can even happen in America. But it can; the evidence is overwhelming and incontrovertible. The insensitivity shown to these people is often appalling -- and widespread -- at mental health clinics all over the country. Many people with DID pick up ten or a dozen incorrect diagnoses -- including of ASPD (antisocial personality disorder) -- before finally being correctly diagnosed, and it's true that repeatedly being bitterly accused of inventing the abuse is another form of abuse on top of and compounding the original. More people need to be educated about the devastation caused by pedophiles and other child abusers so as to prevent this affliction and others like it. All people with DID also have PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder).

Which of these conditions is an autoimmune disorder?

There are many conditions that can be considered an autoimmune disorder. In fact there are about 80 known autoimmune disorders. They include rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, celiac disease, reactive arthritis, Addison's disease, Type I diabetes, lupus, Kawasaki's disease, and vasculitis.

A Tip for Recognizing the Symptoms of Multiple Personality?

Many times, people who suffer severely from multiple personality disorder (or dissociative identity disorder) don't even have a clue that anything is wrong with them. However, friends and family might strongly suspect otherwise. A huge indicator that someone suffers from having a multiple personality is if they periodically portray somebody else, whether it be a real or imaginary person. This person might have their own name, age, race, gender, or other "assigned" attributes.

About how many people have dissociative indentity disorder?

Dissociative identity disorder (formerly called multiple personality disorder) generaly does not kill. Depression and other trauma related to the disorder, or the cause of the disorder, can cause a person with DID to attempt suicide, especially if the person stays in an environment that is harmful to their mental health. Prognoses are also worse if the person does not receive proper treatment.
