His music varied greatly. He had a distinctive voice that was silky with a raspy note. Check him out on YouTube. I'd say if you could only listen to two songs to get an idea of how he began and how he ended, listen first to twist and shout (pay attention to his energy--very Kurt cobainish) and then listen to imagine (pay attention to what he is saying). Remember, he was just a poor guy from Liverpool.
I never even noticed at the time, growing up in the 60s, that there are two Beatles records: Johns & Pauls: they are very different & both very listenable to, even now, all those years later. But if you want sharp, raspish, thought-provoking lyrics then John is for you. Paul is smoother & more commercial. But, & you have to listen carefully, because they are all Lennon & McCartney, the difference is there to be heard. To me, a personal view, Lennon is all about lyrics which proke thought. Sadly an idiot who deserves no more than to die in jail took him from this world. And they talk about crimes against Humanity.......................................
This depends on his emotions and his life at the time.
At the beginning of his career starting The Beatles, he had an upbeat feeling filled with love and great emotion. After Beatlemania and being forced to stay in a studio, Lennon started feeling trapped because of his desire to perform on stage in front of his fans. He started losing himself in songs life "Help!" This song is a real cry for help. "Strawberry Fields Forever" is about his childhood and his longing to regress backwards but no attempt to succeed, will to accept because what his fantasy is- is reality to him. Cannot forget of "Eleanor Rigby." Separation from the Beatles started a whole new style with Yoko Ono. The Plastic Ono Band was formed. This having said, his style changed drastically to an activist movement and the urge for a utopia. "Imagine" is set to have everyone become one and the world will soon be one.
Hope this helped!
