What kind of oil do you use in your hydrostatic transmission for my 4212 simplicity lawn mower?

I had the same problem When I bought my mower I put premium hydraulic oil in it. It would move until it warmed up. then would slip. I thought I was going to have to buy a new drive. I finally got in touch with an engineer at Eaton Hydrostatic, the place that makes the hydro units, and he asked me what oil I was using. I told him premium hydraulic oil. He said "No wonder. You need to use 30 weight motor oil." I haven't had any trouble since. My mower is a 4211 Hydro, with an Eaton Model 6 Hydro unit that is attached to a peerless drive unit.
So if your unit is an Eaton Model 6 or 7, use 30 weight motor oil in it.

How do you route mower deck belt on a simplicity 4212?
goes around the engine pulley next both deck (blade pulleys) then put it around the tightener (blade engagement pulley) with the back Flat side of the belt against the pulley. make sure all the belt gaurds do not contact the belt with the blade engaged or dis-engaged. when you are installing the belt you will have to disconnect the deck lift rod to get the belt the other side of it or it will rub and ruin it. should be just a matter of pulling a cotter pin or push pin.
