You can buy end-of-the-season (used for rental) boards from most smaller stores,as apposed to large chain stores. Also, those cheap drugstore types with fixed foot bindings don't allow for boots to come out when crashing, which can cause ankles to twist or worse. Not worth it. Or try renting first to see if they even like the sport or borrow one. The store clerk will help with sizing for safety if you decide to rent or buy.
