If you are in Florida, it's called a spiny orb weaver spider. I just killed one this morning because it scared the crap out of me. So, as much as it pained me staring at tons of pictures, I had to find out what it was. I have 6 dogs, can't take chances not knowing if it was harmful. Hope this helps. :o)
Sounds like a cat-face spider or Araneus gemmoides. Try looking that up to find pitures of them and see how it compares to the one you found.
