mene mene tekel upharsin comes from the story of the fall of Babylon to the Persian empire in 539 BCE as related in chapter 5 of the book of Daniel in the Old Testament of the Bible. It is a version of the legendary "(hand)writing on the wall." There is no universal agreement among scholars as to what language the inscription would actually have been written in, but this version is presumably Aramaic, transliterated into the English version of the Latin alphabet.

There has long been considerable debate about exactly how the inscription might have been written and how it should be interpreted, since Daniel says the Babylonian scholars couldn't interpret it (which is why the Babylonian king Belshazzar summoned Daniel to interpret it), and since, superficially, the meanings of proposed versions of the inscription, including this one, are anything but obvious. Word for word, mene mene tekel u pharsin is mina mina shekel andhalf-mina, where mina and shekel are names of units of weight, like US pound or ounce, or of currency, like US dollar or cent. Substituting these US units gives: "pound pound ounce and half pound" or "dollar dollar cent and half dollar", hardly any clearer than the original. But mene is derived from a word meaning count, tekel from one meaning weigh, and pharsin from one meaning divide. A standard interpretation of the inscription, based on these etymological relationships, goes something like: "the days of Belshazzar's reign are numbered [count count] - he has been weighed and found wanting [weigh (note that a shekel was only a fiftieth or sixtieth of a mina)] - his kingdom will be divided (between the Median kingdom and the Persian empire, two rivals of Babylon) [divide (note that a pharsin was half a mina and that the word pharsin resembles the word for Persia)]." In any case, Daniel says that Daniel interpreted the inscription as a prediction of the imminent end of Belshazzar's reign.

What was the hand writing on the wall nebuchadnezzar saw?

No. Belshazzar, his son, became king when God wrote the message on the wall. The message said: MENE (mai-nai), MENE, TEKEL (tai-kel), UPHARSIN (ue-fair-sin). MENE means 'numbered', TEKEL means 'weighed', UPHARSIN means 'divided'. So MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN means 'numbered, numbered, weighed, divided.' That night, Belshazzar with beheaded by the Medes, as Daniel predicted, and Darius the king of the Medes became king over the Babylonians and Jews. After he was beheaded and his head with put on a spear so were his advisors and head servants, both stewards and maids, but the princes and magus (magicians) and ministers remained alive. Later they are put in the lions' den with their children and wives.

What does the writing mean in the story Belshazzar's Feast The Handwriting on the Wall?

The writing on the wall in the story of Belshazzar's Feast is interpreted as a warning and a message from God to King Belshazzar, foretelling the fall of his kingdom. It serves as a reminder of divine judgment and the consequences of his actions. The phrase "Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin" is interpreted as "You have been weighed and found wanting."

What does 'The handwriting is on the wall' mean?

It means that it seems (somewhat) obvious that something (usually something bad) is about to happen. This is from the book of Daniel in the Bible when a hand appeared and wrote on the wall of king Belshazzar as he in a drunken party praised the gods of gold, silver, brass and wood.Daniel was brought and translated the writing of as "MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN."This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it. TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting. PERES; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians. So it means basically, "Judgment is at near."

Did Nebuchadnezzar II have any sons?

In the book of Daniel the king of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar the second, had one son called Belshazzar. Nebuchadnezzar had the dream about the statue: Head of gold - Babylon Breast and arms of silver - Medo and Persia Stomach and thighs of brass (or bronze) - Greece Legs of iron and feet of part clay and part iron - Rome Rock - God's kingdom And Belshazzar saw God write on the wall during his feast which was "MENE MENE TEKEL UPHARSIN".

Where does the Bible in Daniel would it be confounded by the multiplicity of strange language?

There simply is no 'multiplicity of strange language' in the Book of Daniel. Perhaps you are speaking about the 'handwriting on the wall:'Daniel 5:25-28New King James Version (NKJV)25 "And this is the inscription that was written:MENE,[a] MENE, TEKEL,[] UPHARSIN.[c]26 This is the interpretation of each word. What was Belshazzar punished for?

Belshazzar was a co-regent of Nabonidus and lived in Babylon. He was derelict in his duties. On the night of his death he was hosting a huge party and drinking out of the gold and silver cups that had been taken from Jerusalem years before. Behind the scenes God was working to crush the Babylonian kingdom and replace it with the Mede/Persian empire. As the party progressed God's finger wrote on the wall, "MENE MENE TEKEL UPHARSIN." The interpretation is this "God has numbered your kingdom, and finished it; you have been weighed in the balance and found wanting; Your kingdom has been divided, and given to the Medes and Persians". That very night Belshazzar was slain.
