[1] About 2,000 years ago Kenya became part of the Africa/Asia trading network that Arabic, Persian, and Swahili speakers so successfully set up. [2] During that time, Swahili held a status equivalent to that held nowadays by English: it was widely known and spoken. [3] Swahili is a Bantu language. And during that time, Bantu was the dominant cultural, ethnic and linguistic group in Kenya. [4] The Portuguese were first of the Europeans to try to claim Kenya as a colony. [5] But the English were much more successful in their military, political and trading attempts in the area. [6[ By the 20th century, the English had successfully linked Kenya to other English-controlled African areas such as Uganda, and to Great Britain. They did so largely by getting involved in agriculture; and by setting up educational and governmental institutions, and trading and transportation networks. [7] Kenya realized political independence from Great Britian, in 1963. [8] But by that time English held a status equivalent to that of Swahili, in the country. For it was the language of all the key sectors of modern industrial development: education, government, and politics.

Kenya is a multilingual country. Although the official languages are Swahili and English, there are actually a total of 62 languages spoken in the country (according to Ethnologue). These mainly consist of tribal African languages as well as a minority of Middle-Eastern and Asian languages spoken by descendants of foreign settlers (i.e. Arabic, Hindi, etc).

The African languages come from three different language families - Bantu languages (spoken in the center and southeast), Nilotic languages (in the west), and Cushitic languages (in the northeast).

not bla bla I know that

In Kenya, the two official languages are English and Swahili (Kiswahili) but the 42 tribes in the country all have their own dialect and therefore it is very common that Kenyan speak fluently 2 to 3 languages (mother tongue/tribe dialect + Kiswahili + English)
English Swahili is the official language of Kenya. This is the most spoken language in the country. Other languages spoken on a regular basis are Kikuyu, Luo, Kalenjin, and Kamba.

AnswerThe official languages are Swahili and English. See this site for more information: http:/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenya

English and Ki Swahili are the two official languages.

Kikuyu, Maasai, Kamba, and Luo are also widely spoken (http:/www.uiowa.edu/~africart/toc/countries/Kenya.html). Visit Ethnologue (http:/www.ethnologue.com/show_country.asp?name=ke) for a description of all 61 languages documented in Kenya. Most are tribal languages.

It depends where you go, in the cities people speak English, Kiswahili and Kikuyu. On the coast you get different dialects and of course there are the tribal languages.

History. The British were the colonial power in Uganda, Kenya, Zanzibar, and Tanganyika (after 1916), and they used both English and Swahili for all official business. Swahili is an indigenous kanguage of East Africa. It originated on the Indian Ocean coast and adjacent islands, and then spread through trade throughout the East African mainkand and into the Congo, Rwanda, and Burundi. a There are several dialects (all mutually intelligible), and the one that is considered standard and is taught in the schools of Tanzania and Kenya is Kiunguja (meaning the language of Zanzibar).
