The Earth's crust is the uppermost layer of the Earth and is solid. It sits on the Mantle which is the huge volume of below the crust but above the inner core.

The Earth's crust is solid and some of the upper mantle is solid too. Those together are called the Lithosphere. Below that, mantle material changes into a more liquid-like form. It is region where this transition from the solid to the liquid is taking place that the name asthenosphereis given. It is separately names because it is the movement of this part of the mantel that carries the tectonic plates above. When we speak of continental drift we are discussing motion of the lithosphere and have to include the continents (crust) plus this asthenosphere.
