Trade, Great Britain vied with France for influence. Both established companies for the purpose, Britain's was the East India Company. It set up trading posts and towns initially. Conflict with the Nawab of Bengal backed by the French led to a Company Army clashing with the Nawab at the Battle of Plassey. Despite being outnumbered by 5,000 (and backed by an Army of 50,000) to 2,500 the British Company troops and their Sepoy troops beat the Nawab's Army comprehensively From this they expanded control and moved into Administration, they continued to expand throughout the rest of the century. After the Indian mutiny/rebellion they handed control to the British Government and the British Raj was formed. See below.

After expanding its base and rule for more than two centuries, Britain's divide and rule policy created a kind of self-realisation amongst the Indians and a movement started in 1857 in the form of a mutiny. This rebellion or mutiny turned into a revolution and struggle for Freedom. While within the country there were reformers and revolutionaries like Swami Dayanand, Raja Ram Mohan Roy and others creating an air for Swarajya and self-rule, the India House in London set up by Shyamjikrihan Verma, a disciple of Swami Dayanand, produced revolutionaries like Veer Sawarkar, Hardyal, Bhagat Singh, Madan Lal Dhingra, Udham Singh etc. etc. who created a sense of fear amongst the Britishers about the safety of their lives through a violent revolution. Netaji Subhash Chander Bose became another big factor on the same lines. All these factors of Non-violent and Violent revolutions from within the country and from outside the country, compelled Britain to grant India self-rule.

Viceroy Louis Mountbatten realized that it was best to bend to the demands of the Indian people for independence rather than spend a great deal of money, troops, and time resisting the inevitable. He met with Gandhi and Nehru and planned the Partition, creating the Muslim state of Pakistan separate from Hindu India.
