The style of writing poetry differs from person to person; long or short meters, three or four lines to a stanza. But the great thing is, no matter how a poem is written it still holds great emotion. Some techniques used in poetry are onomatopoeia, alliteration, assonance, rhyming, simile and metaphor.

    IE: He hates hats.

  2. apostrophe - address to an person or personified object not present.
  3. assonance - the repetition of vowel sounds; similar to alliteration.

    IE: Adam is at Apple Avenue.

  4. cacophony - use of inharmonious sounds; opposite of euphony.
  5. euphony - use of harmonious sounds to produce a cheerful feeling; opposite of cacophony.
  6. hyperbole - exaggeration to stress something; overstatement.
  7. metaphor - a comparison between two unlike things, where one thing becomes another without the use or a word such as like or as.
  8. metonymy - the replacement of a person or object to be named by a word that helps portray meaning.
  9. onomatopoeia - use of words that sound like what they mean.
  10. paradox - something that seems self-contradictory but means something.
  11. personification - an implied metaphor that gives something inhuman human qualities.
  12. rhyme - the repetition of a stressed vowel sound and any nearby, following sounds.

    IE: He ate my cake and went to school late.

  13. simile - a comparison between two unlike things using a word such as like, as, than, or resembles.
  14. synecdoche - a figure-of-speech where a part of something represents a whole.

    IE: Not a finger twitched. (This means that no one flinched; finger represents person.)

Poets can also use the following forms of meter, which is a pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in each line:

  1. iamb - an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable (da DAH).
  2. trochee - a stressed syllable followed by an unstressed syllable (DAH da).
  3. anapest - two unstressed syllables followed by a stressed syllable (da da DAH).
  4. dactyl - a stressed syllable followed by two unstressed syllables (DAH da da).
  5. spondee - two stressed syllables (DAH DAH).
