Together from 1972, their first song was "People need Love". Although they became mainstream after winning Eurovision on 6th of April 1974 with "Waterloo". They tried the year before with Ring, Ring but failed to get through the Swedish heats! The dominated the charts all though the 70's and finally broke up late 1982, early 1983.

I don't think there is a simple answere to why ABBA is loved world wide. There songs are fun; Agnetha, Bjorn, Benny and Anni-Frid have an aluring aura about them. I wish I new why they are so loved. I have all of there stuff and recently purchased the 3 hours of Frida DVD. I like watching this DVD and Frida doesn't even speak English in it! I never get too much of them. Is there a 12-step program for people hooked on ABBA?

They were famous in their own country, Sweden, long before they were known worldwide. After their win with the song Waterloo at the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest they were on their way to international fame.

In Sweden and northern Europe the band became known in the early 70s. They started performing together in 1970, touring Swedish clubs and folk parks. When they released their first single (People Need Love) and album (Ring Ring) in 1972 they entered the Swedish charts immediately and also had some pick up in the UK and US. But the band achieved worldwide fame in 1974 when they won the Eurovision song contest and their song "Waterloo" topped charts all over the globe.

The music written and performed by the group ABBA was so popular at the time of it's release and continues to be enjoyed by millions the world over is due to the fact that it is quality music. Simple yet engaging. Both lyrics and music appeal to a large audience. With few exceptions, ABBA's tunes are 'toe tappers', you can't stop yourself from singing along.
