Listening is an important part of effective communication. There are multiple factors that make bad listening and understanding those factors would come in handy when one tries to learn how to make it good

1-You don’t get distracted easily:- We all try our best to listen, whether it’s a short meeting or a lengthy meeting. However, some of us are distracted by side-clicking or want to reply to a text message. You might think that it is possible to do something else while listening to others. But you can’t really listen to others while doing other things at the same time. Being distracted by another task is not one of the characteristics of a good listener.

2- They never interrupt:- Sometimes, you know more about some topics and are more eager to share your opinions than to listen to the other person. But you must listen and make sure not to interrupt. Patience is one of the basic characteristics of a good listener. A good listener gives the speaker time by letting them complete their point of view. If you have the qualities of a good English Learner or listener, you will not interrupt the speaker. Instead, you wait patiently until the end to share your thoughts or feedback.

3-They listen to learn:- Good listeners believe that they will learn something new from every conversation. They actively listen to learn new information or ask open-ended questions to allow speakers to elaborate. Rather than having similar conversations time and time again, they are still interested and invested, and trying to learn something from everyone.

A good listener is someone who is attentive, open-minded, and empathetic. They give their full focus to the speaker, show genuine interest in what is being said, and strive to understand the speaker's perspective. They also offer feedback and ask clarifying questions to demonstrate their engagement.

A good listener shuts up when someone talks to him/her. But even more important is that the speaker should consider a time limit for his/her exposition. A discussion - and I am certain that this is what you are referring to - means that both the speaker and listener are aware that in any relationship there needs to be an exchange of views. In Meyer's book "Marriages, Shack-ups and Other Disasters" the author describes in great detail in his Verbatim Therapy how time limits - one to two minutes - have to be observed in order to permit a successful exchange of ideas. So your question takes a two-fold answer: being a good listener is not enough. You also must state your position clearly and do it within a time limit.
