Machu Picchu is well known because it was built by human hands for so many years, by a very advanced and also almost unknown civilization, and it was sitting in silence at the top of the world for at least 1000 years. Now is that cool or what?

∙ 11y agoMachu Picchu is almost 8000 ft above sea level. It was built in the 15th century by the Incas but was abandoned a century later. Archaeologists think that they inhabitants died from Smallpox which was introduced by the Conquistadores. By the time the Spanish arrived at the site, it was already abandoned.
Most scholars hypothesise that it was built as the seat of the Inca god emperor Pachacuti, but there is no really solid evidence to prove this.
