Fire flies. Lots of fire flies. And little people with torches. Lots of torches.

Seriously, the sun is basically a nuclear furnace. It's burning hydrogen and creating helium (through fusion). It puts out visible and invisible light as a result.

The moon "shines" because its surface reflects sunlight.
