A phrasal compound is made up of two or more words used to form a single thought. Phrasal compounds can be a phrasal verb or a phrasal adjective.

A phrasal verb is formed by combining a verb with an adverb, a preposition, or both. A phrasal verb can be split in a sentence.

Examples: He put on the kettle. (or, He put the kettle on.)

  • ran into
  • showed up
  • made up
  • looked into

A phrasal adjective is formed any combination of noun, adjective, and prepositional phrases which are used to describe a noun. A phrasal adjective is often hyphenated when placed before the noun it describes but not hyphenated when it comes after the noun.

Examples: He has a razor-sharp wit. (or, His wit is razor sharp.)

  • middle of the road
  • accident prone
  • four foot tall
  • fresh baked
