About 5 years ago an author wrote an interesting article on Rainfall and the need for aggressive development of religion and a warrior class.

The key for no need for a war like class if there was plenty of rain was an abundance of food. No need to raid another population if you already had plenty.

On the other hand in desert areas where evaporation exceeds rainfall, there is a need to travel great distances to gather food and feed livestock. There was a need for war like members to go with the herds and also to stay and defend the home village. Often it was a nomadic combination of both extremes all caused by rainfall or lack of the same.

The author chartered rainfall world wide, then charted religions world wide, noting war like culture and the need for religion to hold that culture together. The need to expand the religion to non believers was normally a part of a low rainfall religious culture. In low rainfall religions there is an apparent need to be war like and religions tend to develop that justify and endorse expansion of the religion as a responsibility of the faithful. The need to convert others much less the world by religious cultures from high rainfall areas does not seem to apply.

It was possible to find the answer to a few questions about a religion. and color the area from green to brown based on the rainfall of the area of origin.

Christianity, Judaism, and Islam all fit the low rainfall criteria while high rainfall areas do not have a need to grow world wide and stay more local or regional.

I have been unable to locate the article, however it was published in a science magazine the week before Hurricane Katrina.
