Parakeets don't actually make nests. In their natural habitat in Australia, parakeets nest in tree cavities, to replicate this, parakeet breeders provide wooden or thick cardboard nest boxes about 6" x 7" x 7" with an entry hole about 1 1/2" in diameter. Most parakeets prefer a perch on the outside of the box in front of the entry hole.

Parakeets, and most other types of parrots, do not "build" nests, but instead use tree hollows and hollow logs for nesting. The entrance to the hollow is usually a hole just big enough for the parrots to climb in and out.

Usually with all birds you get a box and connect it to the cage or maybe even a small box on the inside will work as well. Either way a nest is enclosed to where you the person cannot see within it, however you do want a box that can have the top opened so that you can see inside.

You will most likely need a box or some sort of shelter with a lid for the female will prefer the darkness.
