Until 2012 'silver' UK coins, (5p, 10p, 20p and 50p) were made from an alloy called Cupro-nickel - typically 75% copper, 25% nickel and a trace amount of Manganese.

Since 2012 these coins have been made of plated steel to reduce manufacturing costs.

Current (1983-present) £1 coins are made of nickel-brass, an alloy containing 70% copper, 24.5% zinc, and 5.5% nickel.

There is also a £1 "sovereign" coin which was once minted for circulation and is now made as a bullion coin. Sovereigns have been struck in 22-karat gold since the time of Henry VIII.
