Here's my paraphrase:

My parents kept me from kids who were rough

and who used words like stones and who wore torn clothes.

Their legs showed through rags. The ran in the street

And climbed cliffs and stripped by country streams.

I feared their muscles more than tigers

And their hitting hands and knees on top of my arms

I feared the gestures and name-calling of those boys

Who mimicked me on the road.

They were flexible, they jumped out behind hedges

Like dogs to bark at our world. They threw mud

And I looked the other way, pretending to smile,

I longed to forgive them, but they never smiled.
