Wow, big question. Not easy to answer in a nutshell. Off the top of my head, I think Francis of Assisi was able to achieve a certain type of freedom in his mind and spirit - in his heart and life - that few really grasp in this life. He seemed to know that this world is passing away. He seem to realize that life was fleeting and eternity was only apprehended through grabbing onto life by following Jesus Christ. Francis truly found, or "achieved", freedom and release. Freedom to serve others that the world would otherwise throw away. In his day, it was the lepers. In them, he achieved and 'crucifixion' of himself, and a resurrected fellowship with Christ.

Francis was born to a wealthy Italian merchant family in Assisi. After having been captured during a local war, he had a series of dramatic spiritual experiences. these experiences lead him to abandon all wealthy goods and live and preach in poverty, working and begging for his food. His simplicity, joyful nature, and love for others soon attracted a band of followers whom took vows of absolute poverty, agreeing to reject all property and live by working and begging for their food. The Franciscans became very popular they lived among the people preaching and aiding the poor. They undertook missionary work first throughout Italy and then to all parts of Europe even the Muslim world.
