The Minotaur, part man, part bull.

The monster under the palace of King Minos was called the Minotaur. The Minotaur had the body of a man and the head of a bull, and ate people.

The Minotaur was the child of King Minos' wife, Pasiphae, who the gods caused to fall in love with a white bull in order to punish the King for liking the bull so much he wouldn't sacrifice it.

King Minos wisely imprisoned the Minotaur under his palace and later decreed fourteen of Athens' finest young people be fed to the monster every nine years.

This led to Theseus, Prince of Athens, setting out to kill the Minotaur, which is another story; I won't spoil it for you by telling you the end.

It had a rather difficult lay-out with its hundreds of rooms. There is a legend about a monster - half man, half bull, eating young human beings every year sent from Athens, called the Minotaur, probably the son of Minos, the King of Crete - who lived in a labyrinth. Now historians say that the 'labyrinth ' could be the Palace of Knossos itself.

People of crete?

The first recorded civilization in Crete are the Minoans around 2000 B.C.E.. Their alphabet would serve as the basis for Mycenaean Greek language which is the forerunner to all future European language. The ancient people of Crete were not, in fact, called Cretians, nor do I believe they are referred to as such today. The ancient peoples of Crete were known as the Minoans, after Minos, perhaps the most well-known king of Crete. Minos is notable for his part in the myth of the Minotaur, or Bull of Minos. According to the legend, as a result of his displeasing the gods (specifically, Poseidon), his wife became enamored with a beautiful white bull, with which she conceived the Minotaur. Not one to be undermined so easily, Minos had a labyrinth built around his wife's half-human progeny, to which he would send 10 Athenian men and women every few years. Minos could well have been a title, like Caesar beacame, as their are many different Minos mentioned throughout history.
