When all of Europe was conquered (many times) and ruled by powerful nations and monarchies, which always fought with each other, they started to be short of money and resources to wage war. And human being as a warlike animal can never be fine with someone else being more powerful than him, the nations started to explore unknown lands all around the globe. They started a real race for them. Columbus arrived in South America (which he thought was India) in 1492 and after that all the nations able to form exploration teams ran to the New World. The nations also find new trade routs to India, China and other countries in which they made fortunes from selling European products with great prices, buying exotic things with cheap prices and selling them in Europe with high prices. The powerful European nations conquered all the new lands and made them their colonies. Exploiting them they got vast amounts of money to wage war again on each other, as well as in Europe as in the colonies also.
