In the 1979 novel, Bastian gave The Childlike Empress the new name of Moonchild, which in the original German is Mondenkind. The name is deliberately obscured in the 1984 film version of the first half of the novel.
In the book and in the movie, he yells out, "Moonchild," but I seriously doubt that Moonchild was actually his mother's name.
According to the Related Question (see below) his mother's name is Sarah. But I'm not sure if that's correct or not, since I do not remember his mother's name being mentioned in the film. And I've seen that movie dozens of times since I was 4 years old.
The name he gives the Empress in the novel is "Moonchild" (German Mondenkind). In the 1984 movie, the name is obscured by the storm, sounding vaguely like "Mariah."
The actresses name is Tami Stronach. She was born July 31, 1972 in Tehran, Iran. Other than a television appearance in 2008, The Neverending Story is her only resume listing.
Moonchild. Yes, I was a bit disappointed as well, but that's definitely it.

At the beginning of the story, the conflict was between Atreyu, who was trying to find a cure for the Childlike Emmpress, and the creatures of Fantastica, which means that it is Man vs. Nature. Toward the middle of the story, Bastian is confronted by Atreyu, who wants to take the magical amulet AURYN from him for his own good, and later Atreyu rallies an army to storm the Ivory Tower. This is considered Man vs. Man. Near the end of the story, Bastian must find a way back to his home in the real world, and by doing so he must search Fantastica for answers, so this conflict is considered Man vs. Nature.
