What nationality was St. Patrick? |
[Edit] |
Answer
St. Patrick was born in Britain, which at the time was under Roman rule. I believe that would make him a Roman, but I'm not sure. Thomas Cahill, in "How the Irish Saved Civilization," calls him a "Romanized Briton." Anyway, the story goes that he was captured by Irish pirates and was brought to Ireland as a slave. He changed his name to Patricius, which is from the Latin word for "patrician."
St. Patrick wrote an autobiography, "Confession." It's very short, and here's an online version:

Frank Delaney's version of St. Patrick's gives a lengthy version in his delightful and remarkable book, "Ireland: A Novel."
